NBA Star, Paul Pierce advances to Day 2 of World Series of Poker!

NBA Star Paul Pierce in Professional Poker Tournament

2,181 poker players entered the Tournament !

(Day 1C) of the World Series of Poker No Limit Texas Hold’em Championship in Las Vegas on Saturday. By the end of the day, hundreds had been eliminated from the tournament.
One player who survived and advanced: The Boston Celtics’ Paul Pierce.

The nine-time NBA All-Star started the tournament with 10,000 in chips and finished the day with 63,750, ESPN.com poker blogger Andrew Feldman reported Sunday.

He was scheduled to resume action today with the other players from Day 1C and Day 1A who advanced.

As a star in the NBA, Pierce sticks out with his great play and the passion and emotion he often exhibits. But at the poker table, he “blends in with the field well, quietly raising, folding and calling with the rest of the masses,” Feldman writes.

As it pertains to Pierce’s play and demeanor at the table, Feldman also offered these separate nuggets of analysis:

He’s been focused on the task at hand, quietly keeping to himself and offering a more-serious demeanor at the table.

After spending some time watching him play, it’s clear that he’s comfortable. With headphones on, he acts with precision, but his general demeanor is intimidating and adds an element to his game that not many others possess.

Pierce told pokerlistings.com last month that the game has taught him lessons he could take with him to the basketball court, once the league restarts.

“It helps me on the basketball court, to be more patient and to be more of a thinking player and to be smarter out there.”

Pierce claims to have little poker experience, but when asked why he was playing in the main event, he was blunt in his reasoning.

“The prize,” he said. “Who wouldn’t want to try and come and win that?”

Perhaps Pierce. who is slated to make $15.3 million during the 2011-12 season if it’s played in its entirety, is just looking for a way to supplement his income during the lockout. The winner of this year’s World Series of Poker will win $8.77 million.
